Camp Hope began in 2008 because of a report done by Cook’s Children’s Hospital in Fort Worth which listed Parker County with the highest number of children who said they were hungry.
Becky Kinard responded to that need with Camp Hope and a daily sack lunch program over the summer to feed children. It targeted areas that had a high number of children on school free lunch programs who did not receive regular meals when school was out of session.
Today, Camp Hope has expanded into a program that does more than feed children in the summer. It reflects the mission of Center of Hope – to help our neighbors break the cycle of poverty in Parker County.
In 2010, Camp Hope is a relational ministry that not only provides lunch, but shows them how to make a cheap and healthy lunch and then sends the items home so that they can make the lunches for themselves. An additional bag of groceries is also sent home with every family.
In four different locations in Parker County, the Camp Hope team goes once a week over the summer to minister to children. By building a relationship over the 8-9 weeks in the summer, we will be more effective in building trust to share Christ and instill character qualities.
Through weekly Biblical themes, Bible verses, and a team of volunteers ready to share Christ, Camp Hope is sharing the Gospel of Christ with children all over our county.
If you have one hour or more a week, volunteer to teach life skills such as sewing, bike repair, cooking, creativity, etc. Professionals are also needed to represent a career option to build the idea of a goal or dream for children.
Some medical professionals are already involved to teach hygiene, safety, etc. for 20 minutes at a Camp, but more are needed.
