Community Partnership Brings Hope through Education

Larry TeachingWeatherford College, Center of Hope, and Workforce Solutions North Central Texas team together to provide more than an education, they help people start a new beginning on life. By offering computer skills training “We are helping people move from unemployment or under-employment to jobs with opportunity and future,” declares Center of Hope Executive Director, Paula Robinson.

The partnership began in March 2009, with the COH offering a computer lab and a nurturing environment, Weatherford College providing curriculum and training, WSNCT referring job seekers to take the classes & provides job search resources.

Over 50 students have successfully completed computer skills training & and many have been offered jobs utilizing their new skills. “Right now there are a lot of unemployed people who need skills and certifications to get a good job,” says Julie Lundy, Workforce Training & Development Coordinator at Weatherford College.

Students“The Center of Hope & Workforce Solutions Center see these people every day & we wanted to help them reach their goals. We realized that if the three agencies worked together, we could provide skills training, a supportive environment, and job search resources.” The Computer Skills For Business classes are held at the Center of Hope.

Students must be referred to the class and attend an orientation session before they can register. After successfully finishing the course, students receive a certificate of completion from the Workforce & Continuing Education Department at Weatherford College. Students gain confidence and self esteem through this program.

“We offer a hand up, not a hand out,” says Mrs. Robinson. Currently there is a long waiting list to take the classes. We would love to provide training to more students, but our resources are limited. There are opportunities to sponsor students by contacting the Center of Hope. “We are grateful to Weatherford College and WSNCT and celebrate with them over the amazing results,” says Mrs. Robinson.

“Individuals who came in depressed and struggling with self confidence experience hope for a new beginning and a new life.” Center of Hope forms a relationship with students in the Computer Classes and continues the relationship after classes are over.

StudentsThe Hope for Tomorrow program combines education, mentoring, financial assistance, and faith. In the Jobs for Life class, each student makes a “road map” and Center staff and volunteers work with them to eliminate roadblocks that would keep them from pursuing further education and reaching their goals.

It takes a whole team to accomplish such a lofty goal,” expresses Center of Hope Jim Morrow. “We work together to help our Parker County neighbors.”

Center of Hope plans to expand the program to include the location in East Parker County this fall. Volunteers, donors and community partners are all needed.
