On Friday, November 4, we hosted a Poverty Simulation to create a situation where someone could "walk a mile in someone else's shoes" for a brief time. Each participant was given a role.
Some were in family groups, some were single. Some had children, some were children. Some received government benefits, some had employment for income.
But they each shared the dilemma of keeping their home secure, feeding their family, and adapting to life situations as they occurred.
Many shared their written thoughts after the experience and we want to share them with you.
"The experience rivaled any roller coaster. Reality came crashing down and I ended up homeless after 4 weeks of effort. I left this experience with new found respect for the under-fed, poorly-trained, under-resourced young single mother who fights her way out of poverty."
- "Poverty is very difficult for children. Their parents are so stressed trying to pay the bills that they have little time to spend with their family."
- "I did the right thing (go to work, the bank, etc.) but had no time to pay bills, feed children or take care of other important things."
- "Never have I felt so intensely the hopelessness connected to the struggle to survive. Many times I considered giving up my kids and surrendering to despair."
- "I was overwhelmed by all the paperwork needed to receive services."
Participants were asked: Did your understanding of poverty in Parker County change after this experience?
- "Absolutely! Thank you!" – (This response was written by over a dozen participants)
- "My understanding of poverty changed when I experienced how hard it is to know what to do and face all the quick, rash decisions I had to make."
- "What a nightmare these families experience just to survive day-to-day."
- "The situation was so much harder than I initially thought."
- "After this experience, I will commit to make a difference."
Over 15 other organizations helped to make the Simulation a success. Our goal of increasing community awareness was achieved. Please pray with us for God to water the seeds that were planted in the hearts of people.
God has big plans for Parker County and for His people to love their neighbor. Through faith, education, and support, Center of Hope is making a difference in Parker County.
